A New Beginning

You know how sometimes people say: "I've got good news and bad news... which do you want first" and it's usually something like "The bad news is your hamster was eaten by a triceratops, but I brought you a piece of black licorice" (which is actually like two pieces of bad news because, if you like black licorice chances are your taste receptors are non-functioning... and maybe your brain, too).
Well, I've got good news and bad news:
Bad News: I am not going to be blogging at Three Scobeys anymore
Good News: Business and Atlanta and Pretty-much-everything-involved-in-life is going so incredibly well (and is super-duper busy). There just aren't enough hours in the day to do all of the things that I want to do right now... which is totally fine... but something's gotta give... and this is it. This blog (and all of you amazing people who have bolstered my resolve and wiped my tears with your comments and support) has been so good for me; it gave me an outlet at a time in my life when I most needed one, and it allowed me to chronicle the first year of Evie's life (which is great since I never even cracked the binding of her baby-book).

This isn't the end of ThreeScobeys, though. It's more like a merging. Instead of blogging here, there will be a weekly (and, on really awesome weeks, bi/tri-weekly) personal post over at Scobey Photography. So, if you still want to stay up to date on what's going on in our lives, you can! (CHEERS! CONFETTI! VUVUZELAS!).
In fact, the first post is already up... just waiting with baited breath for you to go and affirm it with a comment. See you there!

Lighting and Other Six-Headed Monsters

Last week I spent Tuesday (the day before I came down with the impukingsomuchiwannadie illness) at City Hall in Hartford. I had not been hauled in by the law-man. I was learning about lighting. And, y'all, lighting scares the pants off of me.

It's one of those things that I would rather not bother with. If I just ignore it... it will gooooo away. I will only take pictures in the day time. No problem. Except that sometimes (and this is just between you and me) people get married at night. I know. Who are these crazies?!

So Carla took some of us Ten Eyckies (this is what I have dubbed her workshop
pupils/groupies) and put us through the lighing wringer. I mean, she was really nice at first. But then there was yelling. And TIME TRIALS. The brutality.

But it was amazing. And I learned so much. I think I may be brave enough to take a shot or two at night. Or at least heavy dusk.

Here are some of my favorite images from the day.

Krystal and Paul from StudioFoto were our models for the day and, well, let's just say they were oooozing the sex. It would have been really uncomfortable if I weren't TOTALLY INTO IT!

And my absolute favorite.
Check out Bruce, Anna, Sandra, Jesse and Greg's images on their blogs.

Thanks Carla, for helping us defeat the six-headed monster!

First Week Away

Our first day of 2010 began in tears. My tears. As I watched Graham pack the Jeep, knowing that we would be driving back to Connecticut without our little girl. We've been at a photography conference (which, by the by, rocked my face right off my head) so Evie is staying at Camp Deanie - my mom's house - for a few more days and then they're flying up on the 8th.

So there were tears; lots of tears. And just when I would think I had finally pulled it together I would look up; and there would be the cheeks. And the tears would recommence. Because, well, what if those cheeks change while I'm away?! What is those cheeks start crawling?!?

There were moments when I didn't know if I'd be able to bring myself to leave. But then I did. I got in the car. We drove away. And I waited. And waited. But more tears didn't come. Instead, my internal dialogue was something like:
"Yaaahhhhoooooooooooiiieeee, Yiiiipppppppiiieeeeee!"

I feel like I am in adult nirvana: on vacation with no child and no work. Granted, I cannot wait for her to come back so that I can squeeze that 67th percentile head of hers... but I am also enjoying these last few nights of quiet.

And if you think that my less-than-sad reaction makes me a bad mom; well, get ready for this: I fed Evie grilled cheese sandwiches all last week. And she LOVED them. HAH!

I mean, if it takes sandwiches to get this peanut the gain some weight well... then... it's sandwiches she'll get!

The Club I Least Wanted to be Part of

This past Sunday we loaded up the Scobey Clan and spent the day at Carla's for a family portrait mega event with all of the other peeps from the studio. It was so much fun. And Evie, in typical Evie fashion, was a trooooo-per. She was incredibly patient and smiley. Especially considering that she only took a 20 minute nap the entire, 6 hour day.

I guess that shouldn't really surprise me. She is a really happy, good-natured baby. But this one time, when Evie was about 12 weeks, I drank caffeine and by the time it got to Evie it had apparently morphed into rocket fuel and she was all schooooooooom, kazoooooooommmmm, wablammmmmoooooo for the next 12 hours.

I spent the majority of that day crying. It was enough to scar me for life.

It is also the reason I am still a little shocked when Evie is her typical, awesome self.

At the end of the day we all sat down and watched a slide-show of the images: they were unreal. It got me all jazzed up and made me want to take more pictures.

So on Tuesday I got Evie all dressed up, put her in a little tutu, and we had a little mini portrait sesh of our own.

Super cute, yeah? Mommy-daughter bonding time, right? Except that exactly .45 seconds after this photo was taken I look down at my camera to check my exposure and Evie rolls off the chair. Does a full 360 degree flip in the air. Lands smack on her big 90th-percentile-head. On the hardwood. And starts screaming.

Yeah. I am officially one of those moms who drops their children on those-things-that-HOUSE-THEIR-BRAINS.

I felt/feel awful about it. Like, seriously terrible. So much so that even after Evie had stopped crying I kept the good ole' Tear Train going for a solid hour.

If life were a video game I would have had little "Mom-guilt + 2,000" signs popping out of my head for the next four days. My mom assures me that every parent has accidently hurt their child in some way, but that doesn't really make me feel better about it.

What have you done that has caused the most self-inflicted-guilt?

Things to be Thankful For

Relationship. It is pretty much my favorite word. I study relationships, I am in relationships, I love to give relationship advice. But this past week... this past week I got to capture relationships with my camera. And y'all: it was so much fun. Here are just a FEW of my favorites.

Everyone, meet the S. Family. Talk about some EN-ER-GY! These kids were so much fun to chase around. Everyone had such great senses of humor, too. They had Graham and me laughing pretty much the whole time we were there.

Miss Emma and Mr. Tripp... climbing on the Japanese Maple

And then Drew joined in the fun.

Sweet Anna has the most beautiful smile.

We went straight from the S's to the Scobey/Chamblee Family portrait session. This family is near and dear to my heart because...well... it's mine! People, I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT DRINK THE WATER IN THE SCOBEY'S HOUSE. I am pretty sure that everyone who has in the past 2 years has ended up pregnant. Between the two families, we have SIX babies under the age of two. Six. But you guys? They are all so stinkin' adorable. So at least we have good genes if we are all out there trying to set the Guinness World Record for procreation.

My sweet niece, Sophi.

Ryan, Amy, and Miss Ella Grace. These three are so in love with one another. It is contagious.

There is just something special about a Daddy's boy. Maybe that is why I love this picture so much.

Two of my favorite people in all of the world. Belle and Rach.

The last portrait session of the week was with the E Family. Margaret and Steve have built a beautiful home that is so full of love. It is really wonderful to be around. I had been DIEING to meet little Kherington ever since she was born in May (exactly one month before Evie made her debut). And may I just say she totally lived up to the hype. And then some.

Ayton made me want to go out a buy Evie like ten-thousand cable knit sweaters. He just looked so dapper in them!

Kherington was even sweeter than I had anticipated. We all know that I am a sucker for cheeks... and I just wanted to nibble on hers all day long!

Thank you to everyone for letting us spend time with your amazing families. We had a wonderful time soaking up the love that you all have for one another.

I will leave you all with a little bit of Evie... because it keeps the Winter blues away.

June Ten Eyck Tuesday

(I am still pregnant. I do NOT want to talk about it.)

Last Tuesday I had the opportunity to go down to New Haven for the day and shoot some gorgeous people, flowers, dresses, and rooms. There was just gorgeousness galore that day...what can I tell you?! The New Haven Lawn Club set the stage for an amazing shoot, while Tony Palmieri, The White Dress by the Shore, and Jennie Fresa added unbelievable details (because what's a stage without props? empty. that's what.).

Here we have the lovely Mandi rocking a bird-cage veil. Those things just scream "vintage". I love it!

Tony (of Datura, A Modern Garden) is a genius of the floral-loving variety...and I have these pictures to prove it. Seriously, he does things with plants that could blow your mind!

This one is cheese-o-riffic, I know...but a little cheese never killed anyone (unless you are super lactose intolerant...in which case I am sorry...because that means you are missing out on one of life's greatest pleasures: soft-serve ice-cream)

More amazing sculptural floral pieces...

I love this shot of Candace...she is very elegant with the side swept hair

This shot of Mandi in her orchid shawl (yes, you read that right...there was a shawl. made from orchids. ahhh!) is one of my favorites.

And there you have it. To see more pictures of this beautiful day check out the pros and their blogs: Carla, Graham, Katie, and Eric...the talent and dashing good looks behind C10ike Photography.

Tricks to Inducing Labor

I had heard that being around ridiculously adorable people could speed up delivery, so when given the opportunity to tag along on Cory and Vickie's engagement shoot with Carla and Graham I was all "SIGN ME UP!".

These two were up for anything...and so was their trusty Cocker Spaniel, Ollie. His tush can be seen in the picture below.

Playin' in some weeds. See? Told you. Up. For. Anything.

Nothing like a piggy-back-ride on the beach...right next to an abundance of algae.

Feet love!! Even their appendages are crazy about each other. Sooooo cute!!
Thank you all for letting my rolly-polly self tag along. I had a blast and was so glad to get to meet your little family! Check out the real professionals for some more shots.

Love is in The Air

Last weekend Graham and I had the pleasure of shooting Jenn and Rich's engagement session. It was so much fun because these two are super photogenic and very in love. I am excited about their wedding in August. It is gonna be a good time! Here are a few of my shots from the day:

Rich is being very James Dean here...leanin' into his love

Eskimo kisses are the BEST!

The old textile mill where we were had these little jewels of color poppage all over the place...it made for some very cool shots

This one is my favorite favorite!

Be sure to check out Graham's blog for more pictures from this beautiful Connecticut day!

Prego Pictures

Last Friday Graham and I had the EXTREME honor of doing a maternity shoot with Carla Ten Eyck. It was the most fun day...and I felt like a princess....and now we have all of these amazing pictures to show Evie when she is older.

Check out Carla's blog for some more shots...and while you are there check out Graham's post (he was a guest blogger on her website last weekend). I cannot believe that we are only EIGHT weeks away from having this little girl. Did I mention that her nursery is painted?? Well, HER NURSERY IS PAINTED!!! We are almost ready. I have never been more excited about anything.

Photography 101

Happy first day of Spring, everyone! It was in the 40's and dreary all day here...not exactly the trumpeting songs of Lilies that I might have hoped for to ring in the season. Graham and I went to a birthday party for one of his coworkers this afternoon...there were cupcakes involved. And gut-busting laughter. And greasy pizza. It was pretty much amazing.

Afterward Professor Scobey (the man formerly known as Graham) took me out for a lesson in photography. There is so much to know about cameras, and his brain has a capacity to hold much more than mine does (like the entire contents of a camera's user manual), but I had a lot of fun learning what I could.

Here are some of the pictures from my first session.
